OPF Granulate compared to other black granular fertilizers

OPF Granulate is sometimes unfairly compared to other black granular fertilizers.

Bio-based

The big difference between the different fertilizers is, among other things, the pH. OPF Granulate has a pH of 5. Many other black granular fertilizers have a pH of 3 (acidic). The major disadvantage is that acidic fertilizer in the root environment causes a rapid accumulation of iron and aluminum in the plant, resulting in a risk of toxicity.

Nitrogen from OPF Granulate consists almost entirely of amino acids, less than 1% consists of ammonium compounds. This is in contrast to the 8.9% ammonium in the fertilizers that resemble OPF Granulate. The ammonium fertilizer is released much faster (2 weeks) and rinses out faster. The result is that the yield is lower and acidification actually increases.

Unlike OPF Granulate

In contrast to OPF Granulate, cheaper fertilizers contain relatively large amounts of sulfur, so you can view these fertilizer granules as a (sulfur) fungicide. These black fertilizer granules, which are often offered as an alternative to OPF, supply more than 100 kilos/ha of sulfur too much per year at the recommended quantities. At the recommended annual dosage, OPF Granulate provides exactly enough sulfur to feed the plants and has no negative effect on soil fungi.
