What is archaeology?

Archaeology is the science of studying the human past. Remnants of houses, burial grounds and fortifications are just a few of the important remains. Together with such objects as, for example, earth-ware, metal, glass or flint, they form the unwritten history of towns, villages or regions. If you want to know more about the history of a certain region, archaeological research is the most suitable way to do it.

Who is allowed to carry out archaeological research or an excavation?

We are BRL SIKB 4000 certified for archaeological research and excavations. The soil is a valuable archive that we want to preserve. That is why archaeological research can only be carried out by specialists. Only certified companies are allowed to perform such valuable work. We always work according to the current version of the Dutch Archaeology Quality Norm (KNA).

What is the archaeological research comprised of?

Not every archaeological research results in excavation. We can divide the archaeology work process into different steps. This process is also referred to as Archaeological Heritage Preservation (AMZ). Preliminary archaeological research starts with desk research. During this phase, we examine whether archaeological remains may be present. If it seems likely, the field investigation ensues. In this field investigation, we inventory the precise size, location and nature of the remains. This is done by way of drilling and trial trenching. If archaeological remains are discovered, and actual excavation will follow.
